Diplomatico #7 Review (Pre-‘85)

First of all, I would like to thank Heiko for sending this to me to try. I have been wanting to smoke one for a while and was glad to be able to document this experience. I went over to Jason’s (Beachcougar) house last night and fired this bad boy up while he smoked a ‘97 ERdM CS. I explain why his cigar is significant a little later.

The wrapper is Colorado in color, slightly rough to the touch and showed very few veins. It is very well constructed, but fragile. If you pressed lightly to feel the roll, you could hear it crackle. For me it was perfectly humidified for long term aging. The cold aroma of the cigar was musty with a blend of exotic wood and saw dust. I guess it’s time to put the blade to him.

Great draw! And I barley shaved the pigtail off. There is nothing better than a vintage stick that is rolled tight, that presents a perfect draw. The cold draw revealed green apples and slight flower bouquet. As the flame touches the foot, an aroma of cocoa lifts in to the air. It kind of took me by surprise. Very pleasant. The initial taste is sour wood and a hint of pepper on the nose. It begins to burn a tad hot, but not too much that it cover up any flavors. Still woody with a light touch of green pepper. The burn is pretty even, but you can begin to see where they missed a leaf in the middle as a small hole appears. Peering into it I could that it would not be that way for long.

In the 2/3, the ash has tightened up and the cigar has become a lot more complex. The combustion is great and it shows on the ash. It was almost completely white at one point. There is a lot of cedar coming through, as well, as some vegetal flavors. A slight rancio flavor underlying, which leads me to believe that the vintage taste will shine through in the next few years.

So, as I am smoking this, Jason and I are passing our cigars back and forth for compare and contrast purposes. To be honest, it was as if we were passing the same cigar around. At first I thought maybe it was my taste buds, but we did this several times with the same results. The Choix Supreme was slightly stronger, but displayed the same profile. So needless to say, both cigars are great.

Ok, I know this is getting a little long, so I’ll hurry it up. The final third is starting to turn a tad one-dimensional, but very tasty nonetheless. It taste as it began, but with a little more complexity. The pepper and vegetal flavor is more pronounced as it comes down the end. If I had as many boxes as Heiko , I would, without a doubt, recommend this as a great morning cigar. But for me, it was a great way to end the night!
